One way to avoid ripples and burrs when drilling holes in tubes and pipes is to use annular cutters. Because annular cutters are hollow inside, there is no dead zone resistance to overcome.

Using a twist drill to drill holes in tubes or pipes can raise concerns about hole circularity, location accuracy, hole finish, chip extraction, burrs, and drilling duration.

The focal point of these concerns is the twist drill's most notable feature; your point. This is not actually a point, but the tangent line where two cutting angles intersect in the drill's soul, or the so-called "dead zone." This dead zone causes the surface speed of the cutting edges to drop to zero.

Lower surface speed reduces cutting efficiency and requires greater thrust, or feed pressure, for the cutting edges to push the material.

Compared to traditional tools (twist drills, etc.), annular cutters can multiply your cutting speed by up to 3 times, while providing longer tool life, a more precise hole, a better finish and no burrs. The cutting edges distribute the cutting load evenly, making cutting faster.

Annular cutters convert a smaller area into chips, requiring less power and thrust. This feature provides longer tool life and less vibration. Slug also offers a higher scrap value than loose chips and shavings.
